Coverage from the Olympic Stadium in Kiev, where the winners of the
14th European Championship will be crowned. Defending champions
Spain began the competition as favourites after maintaining the
impressive form that saw them win the 2010 World Cup, and are
looking to become the first nation to win the Henri Delaunay trophy
twice in succession. While they may not have been at their best in
this tournament, they reached this stage after conceding just one
goal in their previous five matches, ironically in their opening
contest against Italy. The Spanish had to rely on penalties to
overcome Portugal in their semi-final match, whereas Italy produced
an excellent performance to defeat Germany 2-1, who went into that
clash as favourites after winning all of their Group B games and
beating Greece 4-2 in the quarter-finals. Having drawn 1-1 in their
opener against Spain, the Azzurri will hope the enigmatic Mario
Balotelli can emulate his goal-scoring exploits against the Germans,
and prove to be the catalyst for success.
